Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class program is extremely popular amongst our patrons who have already been residing in Canada for a year and want to convert that into permanency.

The Canadian government acknowledges the large number of skilled workers established in Canada and wants to facilitate retaining them. The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is one of the immigration programs under the Express Entry (EE) system that permits individuals who have worked in Canada for at least one year to obtain permanent residency.

This article explores the basics of this procedure in a systematic manner. We recommend availing our of first free consultation to know more.

Minimum Requirements:

To be eligible under the CEC program, the candidate’s profile must meet the following requirements:

Work Experience:

  • The candidate must have at least 12 months of full-time (or an equivalent in part-time) skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years.
  • The work experience must be based on a valid work permit and needs to be in one or more occupations classified as skill type 0, A or B under the National Occupational Classification (NOC).
  • The one year of experience may be gained in two different NOC codes, as long as they are skilled positions
  • However, work experience gained through self-employment and work experience gained while being a full-time student is not valid under CEC.

Language proficiency:

  • The candidates must obtain minimum language levels in all aspects (speaking, reading, listening, and writing) of the English or French language in an approved language test. These levels are summarized below:
NOC skill levelMinimum level for all four language abilities
NOC 0 or ACLB 7
NOC BCLB 5

CEC candidates may take any of the following IRCC-approved language tests:

  • CELPIP-General(English)
  • IELTS-General(English)
  • TEF(French)
  • TCF(French)

The candidates who prove their linguistic abilities in both English and French stand higher chances of obtaining a better CRS score.

Education:

There is no education requirement for this program. However, candidates may improve their CRS score by:

  • earning a certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary or tertiary school
  • completing a foreign credential
  • getting an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) by designated organizations

Residence in Canada:

  • They must plan on living outside the province of Quebec

How to apply?

Unlike the other categories, to be eligible under CEC an applicant should first obtain a work permit. For certain individuals, such as those qualified under the International Experience Canada (IEC) program or the spouse/common-law partner of an international student/foreign worker in Canada, an open work permit may be sufficient. For others, an employer-specific work permit is necessary.

When the candidates gain the required work experience, they may submit a profile in the Express Entry system. Once the profile is submitted, it will subsequently be ranked under the Comprehensive Ranking System, which determines their chances of receiving an invitation to apply (ITA). Selected candidates will move on to the second stage of the application process and will have to undergo medical and background checks, following which they can submit their final application for permanent residency.
